Inside Prep

It’s very surprising how much a home can rattle with crews working on the roof. Here are a few tips to make sure you don’t have any damage to important items:

Fragile items on walls/shelves – Remove important items from walls or shelves. Walls inside can rattle when we work, nail and tear off shingles.

Skylights – Installing new skylights is messy. Removing old skylights causes old attached drywall and overpaint to crack and fall. Sheets or tarps are useful when removing skylights to collect debris.

Attic – Cover any important items in your attic with sheets or tarps. The small gaps between plywood, or around vents often drop granules and other dust. Preferrable to remove any special items just in case, but at least – cover them.

Outside Prep

It’s important to consider your important items on the ground that surround your home.

Move – Move patio furniture, grills, potted plants, garden tools, toys and any decor away from your homes perimeter to prevent accidental damage.

Mow – Mow the law prior to our work to make clean up more efficient. We pick up nails with a magnetic rake, covering areas like your lawn, flower beds and concrete surfaces. Longer grass can interfere with the magnet’s ability.

Relocate – Relocate vehicles, motorcycles, or boats away from the home – to keep them safe and to ensure access for dumpsters and crews. Specialized vehicles or other important items should be removed from the garage area if we are roofing above.

Identify – Inform us about special areas (like ponds), plants, or items – that can’t be moved. We can take additional precautions to assure nothing happens to your beloved items.

Plus we have a few requests to help us be more efficient:

  • Unlock – all gates so we have access to your whole home perimeter. We may want to lay out tarps or other items to assure clean up is fast, and efficient and to prevent damages. Hoses may also prevent gates from shutting.
  • Turn off – sprinklers – we do go up and down the roof during install – and while our roofers appreciate a cool spritz, it makes returning to the roof dangerous causing slips.

Help us help you, as we work together to assure your new roof provided by Matrix Roof & Home brings you a pleasant, damage-free experience.

Neighborhood Happiness

We help you notify your neighbors about the important but loud project by sending out postcards to the surrounding homes. If you encounter a neighbor, please remind them that our disruption will be over quickly because you chose a great company for your work.

If you have any neighbors that may need roofing services, we offer referral presents – to thank you for sharing your good roofing fortune!

Installation Day – Roofing is Noisy

Roofing is loud. It rattles your interiors with the hammering, shingle removal and equipment noise. The good news is the project will be completed in a day or two for typical installations. The bad news – is that it will be loud for a day or two.

Tips:

Work from home? Consider planning to be away during the hours we’re working.

Pets? Show them some extra love by having them go to “day care” for the day. The noises we make are very unsettling for pets. Please know, we can’t have the animals loose in the yard while we’re roofing. Debris falls from the roof and we will clean it up later, but during construction it’s dangerous for pets. Gates need to be left open for hoses or other material movement. Please see this article How to Keep Your Pet Safe During a Home Renovation on This Old House for additional considerations.

Small Children? It’s rare that we encounter a child who can nap through our noise. Please consider an out of home activity for the day. Crews will be gone in the evening so your home can return to normal.

Equipment Deliveries and Expectations

Dumpster – Assure that the area identified in your bid for dumpster delivery is free of vehicles or other items. Delivery of the dumpster will occur typically early the morning of your roof job, and occasionally the night before your job.

Port-O-Potty – If your job is a full day – or multi day – a port-o-potty may also be delivered for our staff.

Material Delivery – Larger material trucks also need clearance as they load shingles onto your roof. It’s fun to watch and better to be outside during the exceptionally loud process, so plan to join us from a safe distance as we load your roofing materials.

Post Installation

Nail Raking – During your installation and extensively after completion, we nail rake over your entire property (grass, flowerbeds, driveway and walkways). This magnetic tool grabs any metal that fell during installation and allows us dispose of it safely.

Use Caution – Exercise care during your first few visits to the yard after installation. Items can lodge in trees or bushes and fall out after rain or shake loose over time. While we clean up extensively, we occasionally miss a nail or two.
